Coljuegos Blocks 10,000 Illegal Gambling Sites and Social Media Accounts in Colombia
The gambling regulator in Colombia, Coljuegos, has taken a significant step in cracking down on illegal gambling activities by blocking a staggering 10,000 unlicensed gambling websites and social media accounts. These entities were found promoting illegal games of chance, including online casinos, digital bingo halls, unregulated sportsbooks, and social media profiles offering raffles and promotions.
Illegal Gambling Crackdown
Coljuegos revealed that it is currently pursuing 35 administrative sanctioning processes against illegal gambling promoters, which include influencers and online organizations promoting raffles on various social media platforms. The regulator has been actively working to enforce the country’s laws against unauthorized gambling activities.
As part of its latest ban wave, Coljuegos collaborated with the Cybernetic Police Center and the Meta company to block 289 social media profiles on Facebook and Instagram. These profiles were found to be in violation of Colombian regulations by conducting raffles, bingo games, and promoting illegal online casinos.
Legal Online Gaming in Colombia
Only 16 online operators are currently licensed to provide online gaming services in Colombia. Legal companies are required to obtain a license and pay an annual fee to operate in the country. Coljuegos distributes the licensing fees to various causes to benefit Colombian citizens.
By operating without a license, illegal online gambling companies not only evade paying licensing fees and taxes but also pose risks to consumers by channeling money outside of the country.
