Ed Bowers, the president of global development at MGM International, recently shared his optimism about Thailand’s potential to become a key player in the Asian integrated resort market. Speaking at the G2E Asia Forum, Bowers highlighted the country’s ability to attract significant investments in the gambling sector.
Thailand’s Potential in the Integrated Resort Industry
If Thailand can establish the right legal framework and infrastructure, Bowers believes the country could generate over $10 billion in annual gross gaming revenue. He described Thailand as a rising star in the region, offering opportunities that are likely to interest major gaming operators.
While discussing the evolution of the gambling industry, Bowers pointed out that destinations like Macau and Singapore have successfully diversified their offerings to attract a broader audience. Integrated resorts that combine gaming with cultural, culinary, and environmental experiences have proven to be successful in boosting tourism and creating jobs.
Despite the potential in Thailand, Bowers highlighted the challenges faced by other Asian countries like South Korea and Vietnam due to regulatory restrictions and limited local access. However, MGM’s upcoming integrated resort project in Osaka, Japan, demonstrates the company’s confidence in the region’s growth potential.
The Current State of Gambling in Thailand
Although Thailand has strict laws prohibiting most forms of gambling, including casinos, there have been discussions in recent years about expanding the industry to boost tourism and create employment opportunities. The government has been exploring ways to regulate the sector, including proposals to check the criminal history of foreign casino visitors.
In a significant development, the Thai government approved a draft law for casinos in March, aiming to attract billions of baht in new investments. The proposed law includes stringent requirements for casino patrons, such as a minimum bank deposit of 50 million baht ($1.47 million), which could limit access to the general population.
Despite the challenges and restrictions, the potential for growth in Thailand’s gambling sector is evident. With the right regulations and infrastructure in place, the country could emerge as a leading destination for integrated resorts in Asia, attracting significant investments and driving economic growth.
