The Star Entertainment Group’s Sydney Casino License Suspended Until 2025
The New South Wales Independent Casino Commission (NICC) has decided that The Star Entertainment Group’s Sydney casino cannot operate until at least September 30, 2025. This decision was made due to the company’s ongoing financial problems, despite its efforts to address compliance issues.
The Star’s Compliance Efforts and License Suspension
In October 2022, the NICC suspended The Star’s Sydney casino license after an inquiry revealed serious compliance issues, including associations with controversial junket operators and financial control lapses. Since then, the company has been working to rectify these issues under the supervision of NICC-appointed manager Nicholas Weeks.
Weeks’ role, initially set to end on March 31, has been extended for another six months to ensure continued regulatory oversight over The Star’s operations. The NICC considered input from both The Star and Weeks to determine the company’s eligibility to retain its casino license in New South Wales.

While The Star has made progress in its compliance efforts, concerns about its financial stability remain a significant hurdle. NICC Chief Commissioner Philip Crawford emphasized the importance of the next six months in determining whether the company can regain its license. In early March, The Star received an emergency cash injection of AU$53 million by transferring its Brisbane casino operations to a Hong Kong-based investment group. This move was crucial to prevent potential bankruptcy and allocate funds towards debt management and regulatory compliance.

The Star Entertainment Group’s CEO and Managing Director, Steve McCann, expressed gratitude to the NICC for recognizing the company’s efforts to improve compliance standards. Despite the ongoing challenges, The Star can continue operating its gaming areas under Weeks’ supervision while its license remains suspended. To regain the license, the company must demonstrate stability and continued adherence to regulations in the upcoming months.
