Casino Workers in Rhode Island Push for Indoor Smoking Ban

About 150 casino workers in Rhode Island took a stand on Tuesday by rallying at the State House in support of a bill that aims to completely eliminate indoor smoking in casinos. Led by Rep. Teresa Tanzi, the workers are determined to improve their working conditions and protect their health.

Efforts to End Indoor Smoking

Rep. Tanzi has been a vocal advocate for closing the indoor smoking loophole in casinos located in Lincoln and Tiverton. Previous attempts to ban indoor smoking have been unsuccessful, but this time, Tanzi has the support of House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi and workers from Butler Hospital.

Tanzi condemned indoor smoking as a “grave injustice” towards workers, highlighting the detrimental impact it has on their health and well-being.

Opposition Concerns

Despite the workers’ efforts, opponents of the proposed ban have raised economic concerns. Frank Ciccone warned that Rhode Island could suffer significant revenue losses if indoor smoking is eliminated in casinos. Similar arguments have been made in other states where casino industry supporters fear losing customers to neighboring states.

Ciccone proposed a compromise by negotiating with Bally’s to expand non-smoking areas within the casinos, aiming to satisfy both workers and stakeholders in the industry.

Workers’ Demands

However, casino workers remain steadfast in their demand for a complete ban on indoor smoking. They argue that the temporary ban during the COVID-19 pandemic was beneficial and that their working conditions deteriorated once smoking was allowed indoors again.

During the protest, workers shared personal stories of health issues they have faced due to exposure to indoor smoke, including heart disease and cancer. The workers believe that a full ban is necessary to protect their health and well-being.

Senate President’s Support

Senate President Valarie Lawson has voiced her support for the indoor smoking ban, emphasizing the importance of a safe working environment for all employees. While supporting the ban, Lawson also stressed the need for a systematic and procedural approach to implementing the change.
