Betsson Withdraws from Dutch Market Due to Regulatory Delays
Online casino and sports betting giant Betsson recently announced that it has decided to abandon its plans to enter the Dutch market due to delays in regulatory approvals. The company’s attempt to acquire Holland Gaming Technology and Holland Power Gaming has fallen through after being in limbo for over a year.
History Repeating for Betsson
In February 19, 2024, Betsson made headlines by announcing its return to the Dutch market through the acquisition of Holland Gaming Technology and Holland Power Gaming for around $30 million. The main objective behind these acquisitions was to facilitate Betsson’s comeback in the Netherlands after exiting the market a few years ago.
Following its departure from the Netherlands in 2021 due to re-regulation issues, Betsson faced significant financial setbacks. The company swiftly applied for a license in hopes of making a prompt return. However, the licensing process encountered major delays and incurred high costs, leading Betsson to eventually withdraw its application to explore more promising opportunities in other regions.
Several months later, Betsson announced its intention to acquire Holland Gaming Technology and Holland Power Gaming, paving the way for its re-entry into the Dutch market. Unfortunately, this deal has now been called off.
Betsson Ends Acquisition Due to Regulatory Hurdles
In an official statement, Betsson confirmed the termination of its agreement to acquire Holland Gaming Technology and Holland Power Gaming. The company cited prolonged regulatory delays as the reason for this decision, noting that the Dutch Gambling Authority (Kansspelautoriteit/KSA) had not issued a verdict yet.
The completion of the acquisition was contingent upon approval from the Dutch Gambling Authority. With no decision forthcoming by the agreed-upon deadline, Betsson opted to cancel the transaction.
As a result, Betsson will be returning Holland Gaming Technology and Holland Power Gaming, with the purchase price minus a break fee being refunded to the company. This means Betsson will receive EUR 26.7 million ($30.4 million) back based on current exchange rates.
Despite the setback, Betsson assured that unwinding the acquisition will not impact the group’s guidance. The company will now shift its focus towards exploring other business opportunities.
In its Q1 report released at the end of April, Betsson showcased a year-on-year growth of 18.3%, attributing this positive outcome to its rapid expansion in Latin America.
