Michel Groothuizen of KSA appointed as a member of GREF
The Dutch Gambling Authority (Kansspelautoriteit/KSA) recently announced that its chairman, Michel Groothuizen, has been appointed as a member of the Gambling Regulators European Forum (GREF). This new role will allow Groothuizen to engage with the European gambling regulatory community and share valuable knowledge and insights.
Promoting Universal European Standards
In a statement released by the KSA, Groothuizen has been named the latest general board member of GREF and will serve a two-year term in this position. Between 2025 and 2027, he will have the opportunity to connect with a wider network of European regulators, creating important networking opportunities and exchanging best practices to ensure the safety, compliance, and transparency of European gaming.
As a key player in strengthening GREF, Groothuizen aims to collaborate with other regulators to establish universal standards for gambling oversight. He emphasized the importance of shared standards among regulators, such as age restrictions for gambling, and expressed his enthusiasm for working closely with regulators from other countries.
KSA’s Increased Oversight
Meanwhile, the KSA has announced plans to enhance its supervision of new regulations on gambling advertising and sponsorships in sports. The Netherlands is taking a phased approach to eliminate untargeted advertising, with a ban on gambling sponsorships in sports set to take effect on July 1.
While the country has already prohibited untargeted ads and gambling content in specific TV programs, sports clubs have been given time to adjust to the new regulations and fulfill existing partnerships. As the enforcement of these rules approaches, the KSA will closely monitor the sector to prevent operators from exploiting loopholes or circumventing the law.
In addition to cracking down on harmful ads, the KSA is intensifying its efforts to combat illegal iGaming and land-based gambling operations, further ensuring a safe and regulated gambling environment in the Netherlands.
