Norsk Tipping Faces Heavy Fine for Mishandling Lottery Draws
Norsk Tipping, the gambling monopoly in Norway, is currently under scrutiny for mishandling lottery draws. Recent investigations have revealed that the company has been operating draws in a way that gives an unfair advantage to syndicates and clubs for years.
Norsk Tipping’s Draw Errors Uncovered
The investigation has uncovered that Norsk Tipping has been making errors in its lottery draws since at least 2021. Authorities suspect that these errors may have been occurring even longer than that.
These errors in handling extra Lotto and Eurojackpot draws have given tickets from gaming syndicates, clubs, or co-operative banks a higher chance of winning. This has affected millions of players who have participated in the draws.
In 2024, Norsk Tipping identified the issue but failed to investigate it further. Instead, they reported the error to the Norwegian Gambling and Foundation Authority and continued conducting additional lottery draws.
Director’s Response
Atle Hamar, the director of Norway’s Lottery and Foundations Authority, has emphasized that Norsk Tipping’s mistakes have led to incorrect winners for years. While acknowledging the company’s efforts in safer gambling practices, Hamar considers the draw-related error a serious legal violation that needs to be addressed.
Hamar has stressed the importance of Norsk Tipping improving its control over the games it offers to ensure fairness and transparency.
Facing a Hefty Fine
As a consequence of these violations, Norsk Tipping could face a fine of up to NOK 46 million ($4.41 million), representing around 0.45% of its turnover. The company has three weeks to present its case before the regulator makes a final decision.
If the fine is imposed, it would be the second penalty for Norsk Tipping in 2025. In February, the company was fined for a self-exclusion failure that affected iOS players. A technical glitch prevented these players from excluding themselves from gambling activities.
Back in 2024, Norsk Tipping was fined NOK 4.5 million ($430K) for a payment error related to the KongKasino game. The company mistakenly paid out NOK 25 million from the game, leading to the penalty.
These repeated violations have raised concerns about Norsk Tipping’s operations and the need for stricter oversight to ensure fair and responsible gambling practices in Norway.
